Mosquitoes are an unfortunate deterrent from spending time outside, especially during the late summer evenings. Not only do the little pests cause itchy welts and days of annoyance but they also are carriers of some rather nasty disease and viruses. There are roughly 30 viruses transmitted by the female mosquito. The only sure fire way to avoid contracting any of these viruses is to avoid becoming the mosquitoes next meal.

To start the control of mosquitoes in your living space, you should check the area for any places that can hold up to a tablespoon of water for at least 10 days. Keeping your yard free of standing water eliminates their breeding area.

Certain plants can be grown to keep mosquitoes at bay naturally. Lemon Balm is the common go to plant to control the mosquito population. Catnip, Basil, Mountain Mint, and Lemon Thyme are also recommended plants to keep in your garden in order to fend off the buzzing bugs. Herbs are always a better alternative to repellent chemicals for both your own health and the environment. If you are looking for a more colorful plant to spruce up your garden and work against the mosquito invasion, look no farther than Lavender, Pennyroyal, Geraniums, and Marigolds.
