In a study performed by the CDC in 2009 it was found that people who were physically active were less likely to suffer from health issues such as heart disease, arthritis, and diabetes. It doesn’t come as a surprise that exercise has a direct impact on health. Sadly, American’s don’t lead as active a life as we should in order to optimize our health.

The same survey by the CDC that revealed the positive correlation between exercise and health found that roughly 55% of adults over the age of 18 NEVER participate in any significant physical activity lasting at least 10 minutes per week. In fact only 28% of adults engaged in the recommended three or more 10 minute periods of physical exertion per week. With statistics such as these it is not surprising that the general health of American’s is in a downward spiral.cdc stats

Music as Motivation

At this point you may be thinking to yourself, exercise seems like a good idea but you can’t seem to find motivation. In 2011 a study was published in The Sport and Exercise Scientist that revealed that musicthe addition of music to a simple workout regimen could help enhance endurance, productivity, and lower feelings of fatigue. With millions of artists and songs at our fingertips, finding the perfect workout playlist is a cinch. Some simple tips to creating your playlist are:

  • Match the music’s rhythm to your movement.
  • Make sure the lyrics are motivational to you
  • Choose songs with a faster tempo to help urge your own movements
  • Find songs YOU enjoy

Studies have shown that accompanying exercise with music can increase your endurance by 15%. Just think of how much more effective your workouts can be because you don’t tire out as quickly.

Health Benefits

Its common sense that exercise is good for you but do you know how? Research has found that a regular exercise regimen of 3 times a week reduces your risk for over two dozen maladies, ranging from depression to heart disease.

immuneA primary benefit to your health is the normalization of insulin and leptin levels brought on by working out. The balancing of these two levels within your body leads to benefits such as healthy blood sugars and weight loss. This seemingly simply factor explodes outward into more health positive effects such as lowering risk of diabetes, lowering blood pressure, strengthening bones, and boosting your immune system.

Working Your Way Into Working Out

Jumping right into strenuous workouts is a bad idea if you don’t fall into the 28% of adults participating in regular exercise. Trying to start high intensity workouts without working your way into them can lead to frustratingly quick burnouts. To begin on your path to fitness enhanced health its best to start slow, begin jogging short distances and increase the length over time. As you become better conditioned you can begin higher intensity routines.yoga

Remember to ‘spread  the love’ so to speak. Change up your workout routines regularly to help avoid getting into a rut while equally covering cardio, core, and strength styles. Some ideas for breaking up the monotony of your routine are adding yoga or pilates. Even finding a local group fitness class to attend once a week can help keep you from getting bored and giving up.
